About Felix Buetgen

Moin

I’m Felix, and I take photographs because I like to look closely. I like pictures that don’t just look “halfway decent” but capture something that would otherwise quickly get lost: atmosphere, change, small clues about what makes a place tick. For me, photography is less a hobby where you come home with a few nice motifs and more a way of consciously perceiving and documenting my surroundings.

On my website you’ll find my portfolio and various work from the last few years. I photograph a lot outdoors, often in cities, while travelling or simply wherever I happen to be. I’m not interested in staging everything perfectly. What matters more to me is that the pictures are honest and show a moment or a place the way it really felt. I like working with clear lines, light and contrast, and I like motifs that tell more at second glance than at first.

What is especially important to me when taking photographs: the traces of people and time. You can often see in a place what is going on, even when nobody is directly in the picture. These are exactly the details I collect. And this is where an area comes in that means the most to me personally, even though it doesn’t make up the largest part of my portfolio.

I notice more and more how quickly our society is changing and how visible that is in everyday life. For me, photography isn’t just about coming back with halfway decent pictures, but about documenting something rather fragile: our society. It is constantly changing and is being driven apart – or together – by many political agitators, but also by activists. These changes are visible and don’t pass us by unnoticed in the cityscape either. Depending on where you are, it’s the “Free Palestine” graffiti or the “FCK AFD” sticker in some places, and the Black Sun or an “Alice für Deutschland” sticker in others. I do my very best to capture these changes in our surroundings. Even though this kind of photography isn’t what fills most of my portfolio, it is still the most important to me.
